We have developed sustained release systems to deliver local anesthetic to provide prolonged duration local anesthesia – lasting days to weeks. We have developed sustained release systems to deliver local anesthetic to provide prolonged duration local anesthesia – lasting days to weeks. Site 1 sodium channel blockers such as tetrodotoxin, saxitoxin, and neosaxitoxin, are of particular interest due to their potency, and low local toxicity. We have also developed means of allowing patients to use external energy sources to determine when local anesthesia is provided, as well as how long it lasts and how intense it is. We study the biological effects of such systems, such as their effects on mitigating the onset of neuropathic pain.
